Field Labelling
Field Labelling Services for North America
What Is Field Labelling?
Field Labelling is a specialised certification process used to verify that individual pieces of equipment comply with mandatory North American safety regulations. Instead of sending a product to a test laboratory, an accredited Nationally Recognised Test Laboratory (NRTL) evaluates the equipment on-site at its final installation location in the United States.
During this assessment, the NRTL inspects the equipment against all relevant US safety standards — such as NFPA 79 and applicable UL or ANSI standards.
If the equipment meets the required criteria, the NRTL applies a Field Label. This label can then be presented to the local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) as proof that the equipment is compliant, safe and ready to operate.
Field Labelling is widely used for equipment that is:
-
Too large, heavy, or complex to ship to a traditional test laboratory.
-
Assembled as a system on site and only exists in its final configuration at installation.
-
Manufactured in very low volumes where full product Listing or Certification is not cost-effective.
Benefits of Field Labelling
Field Labelling offers several significant advantages for manufacturers, integrators and end users:
Faster Assessment - On-site evaluations can typically be completed within 2–3 days, and NRTLs have assessors located nationwide, keeping lead times short.
Lower costs- There is no need to ship equipment to a laboratory, reducing logistics expenses, risk of damage, and downtime.
No ongoing fees - Unlike full product Listings, Field Labelling does not require annual surveillance audits or recurring certification fees. As long as the equipment remains unchanged, the Field Label remains valid.
Ideal for one-off or custom equipment - Field Labelling is the most practical and economical approach for single units, prototypes, custom-built machinery, and low-volume production.
